Winterizing your saltwater pool

BY: Dem 850 COMMENTS CATEGORY: Winter Pools

Do not add extra salt.
Refrain from adding salt to your pool in the winter.
It’s important to maintain salt levels within the manufacturer’s recommended range. When winterizing a saltwater pool, it’s important to leave salt levels on the low end of the salt range. Salt can react with impurities in the water and leave unattractive pool stains. Avoiding extra salt in the weeks leading up to closing is the best way to keep it nice in the winter.

Balance your pool water.
In addition to checking salt levels, it’s important to test and balance your pool chemistry. pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8, Total Alkalinity should be between 80–120 ppm, and Calcium Hardness between 200–400 ppm. Adjust all your levels to match the recommended levels and allow the pool to circulate.
Unbalanced saltwater will decrease the effectiveness of your winter chemicals, so it’s very important to keep the numbers where they need to be.

Clean and remove pool equipment.
Thouroly clean, brush and skim the pool and remove any equipment from the water. Diving boards, ladders, and slides should all be removed.
